CSCLeaders 2013 Alumni Projects

 A number of exciting projects are being developed by CSCLeaders 2013 Alumni in response to the set challenge: "How do people from communities across the world become the bridge makers in the global networks of the future?"

The projects are continuing to progress. Many of them focus on building bridges between communities and strengthening the Commonwealth network. Implementing the ideas and insights developed at CSCLeaders gives participants a focus for continuing their links with each other and an opportunity to operate beyond the world they know. As these projects evolve, we hope they will help to frame or reframe this major challenge.

1.   CC200 - Connecting Cities

Commonwealth Cities 200 (CC200) is a membership party comprised of the approximately 200 cities within the Commonwealth that have more than one million inhabitants.  

CC200 has two primary components - an annual conference and an online collaborative mapping platform.

Member parties convene once a year to share and promote sustainability practices across the Commonwealth.  This annual conference may extend into separate working group meetings focused on the societal benefits. 

The CC200 will provided a mechanism for Commonwealth cities to identify issues, demonstrate positive efforts, and expose any issues that could be tackled by the larger membership party.

Stakeholders are: City governments, primarily the Mayors themselves and the purpose is to share best practice and work together to prevent catastrophic climate change.

It will be delivered by member party board of governors, an elected group by their CC200 peers.

The outcomes will be to get 200 cities in the Commonwealth to work together, and specific deliverables per these working group who will continue to realign with the big issues as they present themselves.


 2.   Common Link - Connecting Classrooms

Common Link is a technology platform that enables a secure connection between classrooms anywhere across the Commonwealth.  It will use the latest ISO standard enterprise security to ensure secure transmission between classrooms.

There will be an extensive, searchable contacts database so that schools can easily find each other.  Each school is assigned a user account and through this they can discover schools in the contacts database and make secure contact from one Common Link school to another via email.  Through this they can arrange a times for Common Link session between classrooms.

Curriculum around the Common Link sessions will be developed to provide an advised structure for the classrooms when they connect.

The outcomes will be to connect schools across the Commonwealth to deliver a more global perspective to school children and their teachers.  The platform runs itself except for some ongoing administration and technical support.


3.   Common Age - Commonwealth Association for the Ageing

An organisation set up to advance the interests of older people throughout the Commonwealth by building capability and capacity in health and care services.  Its objective is to promote and disseminate learning experience and best practice in aged car service design, development, provision and assurance throughout the Commonwealth with the purpose of improving the quality of life for older citizens in Commonwealth countries. 

Common Age will be formally launched at the ACASA Conference in Melbourne 10-13 November 2013.


 4.   SpringBook: School library for South Africa

The purpose of this project is to provide library resources to a school in a Johannesburg township, forging a link with the school and leading to the building of a library there. This project is being run by an Imam, a Rabbi, an educationalist from Australia and a former Chief Superintendent of the Metropolitan Police. This project is already underway with the first batch of books delivered to the township school this month.


5.   The Commonwealth Police Association Community Interest Company


To provide information to members  of the public on policing links between the UK and Commonwealth countries.

  • Assist police organisations in Commonwealth countries.
  • It will provide membership to members of the public interested in policing in the UK and in Commonwealth countries.
  • Develop an interest within serving police officers within UK police forces


The community will benefit by being aware of policing issues that are relevant to police forces in these countries, look at issues specific to forces, review links and ensure that interested members of the public have an organisation that can provide them with this information.

It will ensure informational exchanges between commonwealth police forces and UK forces. It will also facilitate exchange visits between the forces in these countries, as well as co-ordinating educational and informational conferences on policing issues.

Members will receive monthly information bulletins, membership benefits, access to the membership section of the Commonwealth Police Association web-site, access to public lectures and talks on policing and members evenings. The members evenings will allow for networking between members to take place.

The Commonwealth Police Association will generate interest within UK forces by promoting the Association and its benefits to existing officers. Promotion will take place through sites like the Police Oracle, police union magazines and other such sources.


6.   Schools Link - Uganda and UK

From Susan Wamala, Headteacher, Mukono Boarding School, Uganda

The aim is to extend this model to the Solomon Islands and Singapore first and then beyond once the model is well established.

Our link school is with Worplesdon Primary School in Guildford, UK. The staff, children and parents have been able to experience the different teaching methods and understand the challenges that face their school.  Mukono Boarding School lack resources yet we have up to 100 in a class and follow a curriculum that requires much learning of facts but with less attention to understanding; our schools face the challenge of keeping their children focused and motivated.

The sharing of projects and letters has helped bring an understanding and respect of each other as people. Guildford children are impressed that some children in Mukono can share a different experience with them.

  • There have been several teacher exchanges visits. The teachers from Guildford have realised they can contribute to the benefit of Mukono Boarding School and at the same time develop deeper understanding of similarities and differences in the two communities. Likewise the teachers from Mukono Boarding School whenever they travel to Guildford, it broadens their minds and with this exposure they never the same. It is such an experience!
  • Our children and the staff communicate through exchange of emails, writing letters as pen pals, articles in weekly news letters, photos
  • As the head teacher, I am keen to encourage a large allotment/feeding programme to entice more children into schools. Cultivation of crops within school grounds is proving worthwhile, and is increasing the food for lunches. Some of the funding given to this school goes to this purpose. Children from a different country growing vegetables that are similar, excites our children
  • Our link school has supported the sanitation and hygiene by funding a rainwater harvesting and a roofing project. Now children needn't travel long distances to get water because a number of tanks have been installed. Upon each building where water is collected was re-roofed after removing asbestos iron sheets which would be a danger to the children's lives. In conjunction with The Kampala Kids League 500 disadvantaged children of all abilities are now learning football skills and will take part in league matches.  The Casey Trust has helped to finance this project. Mukono Boarding Schools kids are some of the beneficiaries. Sports have made the children love school.
